What are Hemorrhoids

Many people have hemorrhoids but are not sure what hemorrhoids really are. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal canal. When the veins swell inside of the anal canal they can form internal hemorrhoids. If the veins swell near the opening of the anal canal they form external hemorrhoids. Many people have both types of hemorrhoids just like I did.

Internal Hemorrhoids

You may have internal hemorrhoids if you see bright red streaks of blood on the surface of the stool, on the toilet paper or on the toilet bowl after you have a normal bowel movement. Internal hemorrhoids are swollen small veins throughout the walls of the anal canal. The hemorrhoids can also be large sagging veins that lump out of the anus. They can be really painful if they bulge out and are squeezed by anal muscles.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids can also bleed just like internal hemorrhoids. The blood can pool which can cause a hard painful lump which would be the hemorrhoid.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are formed when there is too much pressure on the veins in the rectal and pelvic areas. A normal anus function fills up with blood which helps to control bowel movement. If there is too much pressure and strain the anus during a movement of stool, the increased pressure on the veins causes the tissue in the veins to stretch and swell which can cause hemorrhoids. Constipation and diarrhea can also cause pressure on the veins and cause hemorrhoids. Pregnant women can get hemorrhoids during their pregnancy because of the increased blood vessels pressure in the pelvic area. Being overweight can also lead to hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids Symptoms

There are many symptoms of both internal and external hemorrhoids:

  • Bleeding during bowel movements – There may be streaks of blood on the toilet paper after you have a bowel movement where you had to strain during the bowel movement. You may also see some blood on the surface of the stool.
  • Rectal itching
  • Rectal pain where it can be painful to clean the area

Treatment for Hemorrhoids

There are numerous treatments for hemorrhoids available. Believe me I have tried all of them and none of the traditional treatments worked for me. The hemorrhoids just came back. Luckily I did find one home remedy for hemorrhoids that did work for me.

Some of the treatments are:

  • Rubber band ligation – A procedure in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at its base with rubber bands, cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid.
  • Infrared photocoagulation or coagulation therapy: This is a surgery for small and medium hemorrhoids. A doctor uses infrared light in your anus that heats up and causes scar tissue which cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. This will make the hemorrhoid die and a scar tissue that forms holds the veins in place so that they don’t bulge into the anal canal.

Those two painful procedures were horrible to go through and they were very painful afterward. What made it worse is that the hemorrhoids came back. I did find a natural way to get rid of the hemorrhoids. Click here if you want to see the product that helped me.
